Special Features:

This twelve-year-old Mortlach matured entirely in a single Pedro Ximénez sherry hogshead. The cask yielded 324 bottles, filled at a natural cask strength of 61.6%.

Succulent malt, ripe stone fruit and honey combine with pear, caramelised condensed milk, candied pineapple and orange. Caramel, mineral accents, pepper and dry oak complement the powerful, syrupy-sweet fruit.

This 0.7-litre bottling is non-chill-filtered and contains no colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Robust malt bread, sweet barley, ripe stone fruit and honey are accompanied by caramel, caramelised condensed milk and poached pear, with a mineral note in the background.
• Palate: Dense and mouth-filling, the whisky presents sherry, robust oak spice, golden syrup and malt. Candied orange, green apple, yellow plum and candied pineapple meet warming pepper and dry oak.
• Finish: The long finish combines syrupy sweetness with warming oak, pepper and malt. It then becomes slightly nutty and oily before a final impression of orange appears.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mortlach was founded in 1823 as Dufftown’s first legally licensed distillery. Its complex 2.81-times distillation process and traditional worm-tub condensers shape its robust, multi-layered style. With this type of condensation, the vapour travels through a coiled copper pipe immersed in a cold-water tank; the reduced copper contact favours a heavier, more robust spirit.

Atom Brands assembled the Wormtub Single Cask series from individual casks sourced from Scottish distilleries that continue to use worm-tub condensers. Mortlach is one of the five bottlings in the first series, and That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottled this edition.
