Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 51%
Special Features:
The combination of ex-bourbon and Mizunara shapes this ten-year-old Neisson. Distilled in 2016, the rhum agricole first matured in an American oak ex-bourbon cask, then in a cask made from Mizunara, a rare Japanese oak species. The release comprises 250 bottles of 0.7 litres each, bottled at a cask strength of 51%. The evaporation loss during maturation stated on the label is 70%.
With Artist #16, La Maison du Whisky introduces rum to the Artist range for the first time. The collaboration with Neisson forms part of the Collection Les Anthologistes. Martinique-born artist Johanna Reynaud, known as Gribouilliz, created an animal world of her own for the labels. This bottling features her Scolopendre design: a colourful centipede whose form evokes sugar cane. The rum comes in gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose is fresh and juicy, with banana, pineapple and mango. Pink peppercorns and cloves accompany coconut and a medicinal note reminiscent of Tiger Balm. With air, cane sugar, lime and dried flowers emerge.
- Palate: The rum is delicate and supple on the palate. Lemon, orange and grapefruit bring a tart freshness. An impression of fresh liquorice root gives way to salty and herbaceous notes, accompanied by the floral scent of honeysuckle.
- Finish: The long finish unfolds with rose petals, Turkish delight, dates and figs. It becomes increasingly concentrated, while remaining both warm and refreshing. Exhaling through the nose reveals an aftertaste reminiscent of pistachio cake.
Distillery/Bottler:
Neisson has its roots at Domaine Thieubert in Le Carbet, Martinique. Adrien Neisson bought land there in 1931 and planted sugar cane; the distillery he built with his brother Jean was officially founded in 1932. Jean brought his training as a chemical engineer to the production process. In 1995, his daughter Claudine Neisson Vernant and his grandson Grégory Vernant took over the family business. In 2018, Neisson was awarded the «Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant» (EPV) label.
Neisson makes its rhum agricole from sugar-cane juice. The distillery uses its own yeasts, originally obtained from its own sugar cane, and allows fermentation to last between 72 and 120 hours. Continuous distillation takes place in an all-copper Savalle column, installed in 1952 and further developed by Jean Neisson. It is dismantled, inspected and reassembled every year. This Artist release was also bottled on site at Domaines Thieubert; La Maison du Whisky is responsible for the edition.
