To mark Nikka’s 90th anniversary, the classic Yoichi Single Malt comes in a limited-edition gift box. This anniversary presentation contains the regular Yoichi whisky, not a separately matured expression. Fruity and floral notes mingle with malt sweetness, peat, smoke and sweet oak; orange is also part of its aromatic profile.

Yoichi distils in pot stills fired directly with coal. The distillers control the fire to maintain the necessary heat; this demanding method contributes to the robust character of the spirit. In the whisky, fruit and sweet oak notes sit alongside a pronounced peat flavour on the palate. Delicate roasted notes and a gentle smoky note round out the profile.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, fruit and gentle oak notes mingle with apricot, spice and soft smoke.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is robust and balanced: pronounced peat flavour and delicate roasted notes accompany fresh fruit and nuts.
• Finish: The finish is long and silky. Pear, plum and apple linger alongside sweet oak and a subtle smoky note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Masataka Taketsuru founded Yoichi on Hokkaido in 1934 as Nikka’s first distillery. He sought a place with a climate that reminded him of Scotland. Yoichi lies near the Sea of Japan and draws its water from the Yoichi River. The distillery uses straight pot stills with downward-sloping lyne arms and continues to fire them directly with coal. Controlling the fire requires experience and constant attention. Nikka has been part of the Asahi Group since 2001 and offers this Single Malt as an original bottling.
