Murray McDavid selected this whisky, distilled at North British in 2011, for the Select Grain range in its spring 2025 release. Rather than becoming part of a blend, it stands on its own as a 13-year-old Single Grain.

After ten years in bourbon hogsheads, the whisky spent a further three years in Tawny Port casks from Caves de Murça and PX sherry casks from Ximénez-Spínola, all used for whisky for the first time. Murray McDavid combined the two finishing parcels from casks 2200009 and 2201353, bottling 601 bottles at 51.7% in 2025. The cask combination brings fruit and sweetness to the grain whisky’s creamy character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers stewed fruit and berries alongside orange oil.
• Palate: Orange marmalade and caramel sauce meet a creamy texture on the palate.
• Finish: A buttery impression lingers on the finish with cocoa powder and vanilla.

Distillery/Bottler:

Founded in 1885, the North British Distillery in Edinburgh began operating in 1887. Its grain whisky is used primarily as a foundation for blended Scotch whisky. The distillery continues to use maize and distils the fermented grain wash in continuously operating patent, or Coffey, stills.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. The independent bottler made finishing whisky in selected wine and spirits casks a focus of its work. Now part of Aceo Ltd., Murray McDavid is based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.
