This North Port is part of the third Recollection Series, in which Gordon & MacPhail presents whiskies from distilleries that have closed or been silent for many years. Distilled in 1981, the single malt matured for 42 years in refill American hogshead 2072. On 19 June 2024, Gordon & MacPhail bottled 132 bottles from the cask at 50.9%. It comes in a premium box.

Bright citrus and apple fruit meet apricot jam and butterscotch. Walnut, leather and mature oak lend the fruit-led profile a spicy, nutty depth. The whisky contains no added colouring and was not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, citrus aromas mingle with red apple and butterscotch. Apricot jam and walnut give way to a delicate note of leather.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet mandarin peel and coconut shavings meet mild ginger spice. Demerara sugar then emerges, followed by mature oak.
• Finish: The dry finish is medium-bodied and shows a note of Brazil nut.

Distillery/Bottler:

The distillery in Brechin was founded in 1820 by the brothers David, John and Alexander Guthrie and was initially called Brechin Distillery. It later became North Port. After closing in 1928, it resumed production after the Second World War before falling silent for good in 1983. The building was demolished in 1994.

Gordon & MacPhail had this whisky matured in a cask made to its specifications and bottled it as part of the Recollection Series. For the third release, the independent bottler selected six single-cask whiskies from distilleries that had closed or been silent for many years. Illustrations by Bruno Mangyoku accompany the edition.
