Old Ballantruan reveals the heavily peated side of Speyside's Tomintoul Distillery. This fifteen-year-old expression matures exclusively in American oak ex-bourbon casks. Its character combines pronounced smoke with savoury, sweet and spicy impressions.

The whisky is bottled at 50% alcohol without chill filtration or added colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is intensely smoky, recalling grilled meat, bell peppers and green banana. Hints of eucalyptus and maple sweetness add further nuances.
• Palate: On the palate, grilled fennel, pak choi and cured meat combine with rich fruitcake. Liquorice, black olives and cinnamon sticks complete the savoury, spicy character.
• Finish: The long finish is warming. Marzipan, air-dried ham and pistachios give way to a sweet, smoky aftertaste with anise.

Distillery/Bottler:

Built in 1965, Tomintoul Distillery lies near the Highland village of the same name in the Cairngorms National Park. Its water comes from Ballantruan Spring, which also gives the Old Ballantruan brand its name. The distillery is equipped with tall stills; since its expansion in 1974, it has operated two wash stills and two spirit stills.

Tomintoul has belonged to Angus Dundee Distillers since 2000. Alongside whisky for blends, the distillery produces its own single malts. While its regular production uses unpeated malt, its peated variant is made with malt containing 55 ppm phenols. This figure refers to the malt, not the fully matured whisky. Old Ballantruan was launched in 2005 as Tomintoul's peated brand.
