Penderyn 10 y.o. Badwolf - Icons of Wales No 13 is the 13th special bottling in the Icons of Wales Collection. It was created to mark the 10th anniversary of Cardiff’s Bad Wolf Studios, honouring a Welsh company that produces television stories for an international audience.

The 10-year-old single malt matured entirely at the Brecon Distillery in very old Tawny Port pipes that had previously held port for around 60 years. This was therefore not merely a short finish: the entire maturation provides the framework for the whisky’s pronounced fruit, caramel and marzipan notes.

This distillery bottling is presented at 46% in a 0.7-litre bottle. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

The Icons of Wales Collection comprises special bottlings, each dedicated to a person, milestone or event from Wales. Bad Wolf connects this concept with contemporary Welsh television production and creative storytelling.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose initially reveals delicate orange blossom and gentle rose petals. These are followed by spiced fruitcake, red and golden raisins, fig preserve, fresh strawberries and tart raspberries.
• Palate: On the palate, stewed dark fruit meets lighter orchard-fruit notes. Sweet and salty accents accompany toffee, marzipan and bittersweet orange marmalade, while gentle oak and subtle spice add depth without making the whisky feel heavy.
• Finish: The long, slowly developing finish brings dried apricot, salted caramel and nutmeg. It begins sweet and generous before becoming increasingly dry and elegant as it fades.

Distillery/Bottler:

Penderyn launched its single malt on 1 March 2004, reconnecting with a Welsh whisky tradition. The last distillery before Penderyn, located in Frongoch, had closed in 1903. The original site is in the Brecon Beacons, where this Bad Wolf bottling also matured.

One distinctive feature of the distillery is the Faraday Still designed by Dr David Faraday. In this single copper still, vapour rises through a column with several plates and repeatedly condenses before the spirit is collected at up to 92% alcohol. Since 2014, Penderyn has complemented this equipment with Scottish-style pot stills, which can produce a heavier, oilier spirit. At the Brecon Beacons site, the whisky is married with water from the region.
