This gift set explores three distinct expressions from the Penderyn Dragon Range. It contains Myth, Legend and Celt in one 0.2-litre bottle each; all three Welsh single malts are bottled at 40% ABV. Introduced in 2015, the range bears the red dragon, the national symbol of Wales.

The three expressions demonstrate the influence of different cask regimes: Legend receives a Madeira finish, Myth matures in selected ex-bourbon casks and rejuvenated oak casks, while Celt is finished in quarter casks that previously held peated whisky. The selection therefore ranges from lively fruit and sweetness to gentle peat smoke and maritime notes.

Penderyn presents the three original bottlings together in a gift box. They are non-chill-filtered and contain no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Myth opens with fresh, lively notes of citrus fruit, apple, pear drops and a very subtle trace of tropical fruit. In Legend, fresh apples and citrus fruit combine with cream fudge and sultanas to create a fresh, clear and balanced impression. Celt reveals mild peat smoke, a rocky maritime character and warm marmalade on toast.
• Palate: Myth is initially dominated by sweetness before a refreshing bitterness emerges, while mixed fruit remains the defining flavour. Legend is exceptionally smooth, combining fresh fruit with richer dried fruit. Subtle sweetness and a hint of bitterness keep the profile fresh. Celt begins with pronounced sweetness, followed by smoky and slightly medicinal impressions.
• Finish: Myth gradually fades, leaving a lively, light and approachable overall impression. Legend has a long finish of Madeira cake and sultanas. Celt develops a slight bitterness, while a lingering freshness remains in the mouth for a long time.

Distillery/Bottler:

The idea for Penderyn emerged from conversations among a group of friends at the Glancynon Inn in nearby Hirwaun. Distillation began on 14 September 2000; its launch on the Welsh national day in March 2004 marked the return of commercially produced Welsh whisky after a hiatus of more than 100 years. Whisky expert Dr Jim Swan, who joined Penderyn in 2002, helped shape the distillery’s characteristic style.

At its original site in the southern foothills of the Brecon Beacons, Penderyn produces its own mash from malted barley. A custom-designed Faraday still with a single column creates a high-strength, aromatic spirit, which is combined with water from the Brecon Beacons and matured in selected casks. Penderyn opened a second site in Llandudno in 2021 and another distillery in Swansea’s historic copperworks in 2023.
