Penderyn Madeira Cask Finish embodies the Welsh distillery’s original house style. The single malt first matures in ex-bourbon casks before receiving a finish in ex-Madeira wine casks. This sequence combines Penderyn’s light, fruit-forward character with the additional sweetness and complexity of the Madeira casks.

This non-smoky expression is bottled at 46% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is fresh, combining creamy toffee with ripe fruit and raisins.
• Palate: The whisky is well-defined and finely rounded on the palate, with its sweetness balancing an enlivening dryness.
• Finish: Tropical fruit, raisins and vanilla linger for a long time in the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Penderyn’s story began in the late 1990s with the idea of bringing whisky production back to Wales after more than a century. The village of Penderyn, on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, was chosen partly because it had its own spring. A copper still designed by Dr David Faraday began operating there in 2000, and the first Penderyn Single Malt was launched on St David’s Day in 2004.

The Faraday still combines a single pot with a copper column. The spirit is collected at up to 92% alcohol, giving it a particularly light and fruity style. Whisky expert and chemist Dr Jim Swan recognised the potential of this spirit and recommended finishing it in Madeira casks, an approach that developed into Penderyn’s signature house style.
