Finishing in former Port wine casks gives Penderyn Portwood Finish its full-bodied character. Its cask-led fruitiness combines with dark chocolate, nutty toasted notes and oak. Penderyn includes the whisky in its Gold Range, whose design references the precious Welsh gold of former princes.

The single malt is bottled at 46% and presented in gift packaging. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals abundant dried fruit, dark chocolate and cranberry. A touch of toasted oak combines with a dry note of baked nuts.
• Palate: The whisky is rich and creamy on the palate, with honey and gentle spices coming to the fore.
• Finish: The finish is soft and smooth. Gentle oak and honeyed sweetness linger delicately on the tongue.

Distillery/Bottler:

The idea for Penderyn emerged in the late 1990s during conversations among friends in a pub in Hirwaun, South Wales. They chose the village of Penderyn for its natural spring-water supply. In 2000, a copper still designed by Dr David Faraday began operating there. Penderyn Whisky was launched on St David’s Day 2004, bringing commercial whisky production back to Wales after more than a century.

The Faraday still combines a single copper pot with a column positioned above it. The rising vapour repeatedly condenses and re-evaporates before Penderyn draws off the new make spirit at 92% ABV. This design is intended to create a light, fruit-forward distillery character. For the subsequent cask maturation, Penderyn uses Port wine casks from Portugal alongside bourbon, Madeira and Oloroso casks.
