Port Askaig 8 combines smoky Islay character with varied cask maturation. After 3 years in American oak casks, the whisky matures for at least another 5 years in a selection of Bourbon Barrels, toasted American oak Barrels, PX Sherry Butts and Refill Hogsheads. Master Blender Oliver Chilton brings these whiskies together to create the single malt. Refill Hogsheads are casks that have already been used to mature whisky.

The whisky is bottled at 45.8% without chill filtration or added colouring. Dark chocolate and savoury accents add further contrasts to its combination of smoke, citrus fruit and sweet biscuit notes.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, charcoal smoke, lemon oil and pine mingle with gingerbread, dark chocolate chips and toasted vanilla. Subtle hints of smoked butter and tarred rope emerge in the background.
• Palate: On the palate, heather honey and toasted multigrain bread combine with lemon bitters and grilled grapefruit. Sweet ginger biscuits and caramelised spiced biscuits balance the more bitter citrus notes. With a little time in the glass, a strong impression of pepper sauce develops.
• Finish: On the finish, dark chocolate and ginger preserved in syrup give way to melon and air-dried ham. These impressions linger and continue to develop with warming chilli spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Port Askaig takes its name from a settlement on Islay’s north-east coast that serves as a gateway to the island. The brand belongs to Elixir Distillers and was launched in 2009. It focuses on Islay single malts, combining the selection of suitable casks with the blending of different maturation influences.

Brothers Sukhinder and Rajbir Singh are behind Elixir Distillers. In 2002, Sukhinder began bottling single-cask whiskies for The Single Malts of Scotland. The independent bottling business previously known as Speciality Drinks became Elixir Distillers in 2017. The company develops spirits brands and creates bottlings through cask selection and blending.
