Special Features:

Porto Cruz Tawny combines red-grape fruit with at least three years of ageing in large oak tuns. Its grapes come from Portugal’s Douro Valley. During Port production, fermentation is stopped by adding grape spirit, leaving some of the grapes’ natural sugar in the wine.

In the glass, it is red with copper highlights. Red berries and dried fruit shape its character. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif at room temperature or over ice, and served with dried fruit, duck or melon. Chocolate desserts, roasted nuts and strong cheese also make suitable pairings.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals strawberries and raspberries, alongside currant jam, dried fruit and raisins, with milk chocolate and cinnamon.
• Palate: On the palate, sweetness combines with noticeable acidity and a full body. Raisins, dried fruit, chocolate and spices define the flavour.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming.

Distillery/Bottler:

Porto Cruz traces its history back to 1887. The Port house is associated with Vila Nova de Gaia on the Douro, where its wines are aged and bottled. This Tawny is produced and bottled by Gran Cruz Porto Sociedade Comercial de Vinhos Lda.

Porto Cruz’s production methods include pressing and macerating the grapes, fermentation and subsequent fortification with grape spirit. The chosen ageing method then determines the style: depending on the type of Port, the house uses different wooden vessels or bottle ageing. For the Tawny, the emphasis is on several years of oak ageing and the interplay between fruit and maturation aromas.
