Righ Seumas II Batch 4 brings together malt and grain whiskies from Islay, Speyside, the Highlands and Lowlands, with a final maturation in Sherry Hogsheads. This twelve-year-old Crafted Blend from the 2008 vintage consists of 70 percent malt and 30 percent grain whisky. Its constituent whiskies matured in bourbon, wine and sherry casks.

Inspired by Jim McEwan, the blend includes malts from Bruichladdich, Auchentoshan, Tobermory, Arran and Old Rhosdhu. Bordeaux red wine barriques were used for these malts; they were then married with grain whisky and matured further in Sherry Hogsheads. Bottled in 2021, this release comes from three casks and comprises 964 bottles. Rather than expressing the character of a single distillery, it brings together influences from several Scottish regions. The whisky was bottled at 46%, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, herbs and grass mingle with smoke, a lightly burnt note and smoked plums. Further fruit aromas are accompanied by leather and vanilla.
• Palate: On the palate, raisins, figs, dates and dried apricots combine with nuts. The whisky has a buttery feel and recalls cake with toffee, complemented by oak spice.
• Finish: Sooty notes and tobacco remain present on the finish alongside plums and apricots. The finish also feels creamy and reveals dried fruit.

Distillery/Bottler:

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank Distillery. Further maturation in selected casks, particularly wine casks, became central to their work early on. Today, the independent bottler stores and monitors its stocks in the traditional warehouses of Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. Various Scottish distilleries produced the spirits; Murray McDavid's contribution to Righ Seumas II lies in selection, cask management, blending and bottling.

For further maturation, the team sources freshly emptied casks from wine producers, bodegas and American whiskey makers. The cask type and maturation period are tailored to the character of each whisky. At Coleburn, the team checks individual casks to determine the right moment for bottling.
