Special Features:

Tropical maturation followed by an extended sherry finish shapes this Savanna from Rum Nation's Rare Rums series. Distilled in 2006, the rum initially matured in former Cognac casks on Réunion. It then spent 42 months in second-fill Oloroso sherry casks in Europe. This bottling brings together rum from casks 816 and 817.

Slow fermentation lays the foundation for its pronounced ester character. Extended cask ageing adds further influences: citrus and tea notes meet astringent tannins, cocoa and dark wood spice. Rum Nation bottled this sixteen-year-old rum in 2022 at 57.65%. The limited release comprises 1,278 bottles; the 0.7-litre bottle comes in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, bergamot, Earl Grey and orange peel mingle with cola and chinotto. Cloves, black coffee and herbal notes add to the ester-rich bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, firm tannins contrast with the sweetness of cocoa powder and burnt sugar. A vermouth-like accent adds to this interplay.
• Finish: The finish leaves very dark, oak-led and spicy impressions.

Distillery/Bottler:

Savanna is closely linked to Réunion's sugar industry. In 1992, the distillery moved from Saint-Paul to Bois Rouge near Saint-André, beside the local sugar factory. Its range includes molasses rums, agricole rums made from sugar cane juice and particularly ester-rich spirits. Savanna cultivates its own yeasts and uses various distillation systems, including a copper Savalle column. This diversity underpins its different styles of rum.

Independent bottler Rum Nation was founded in 1999 by Fabio Rossi. Its approach centres on the distinctive rum styles of different countries of origin. Rum Nation selects aged rums from various distilleries and brings them to Italy for further work and bottling. The Rare Rums series focuses on small releases at cask strength, identifying the distillery and cask numbers. Individually numbered bottles, glass stoppers and gift tubes are part of the series' presentation.
