The Scapegrace Distillery is located precisely at the coordinates 45.0194° S, 169.2153° E, at the 45th parallel. The remote location, with epic views of Mount Pisa and Lake Dunstan in southern New Zealand, is no coincidence. Situated on the line between the equator and the South Pole, the country's largest distillery project benefits from intense summers and freezing winters—conditions essential for the special maturation of the single malt.
Local barley from South Canterbury, fresh glacial water from the Southern Alps, and Manuka wood for kilning smoked malt: Scapegrace embraces a natural "grain-to-glass" philosophy. The result? Powerful, unadulterated New World single malt whiskies with a profile similar to Highland malts.
One of the first bottlings in the core range is Scapegrace Anthem. This single malt is distilled from malted barley dried over the complex smoke of the native Manuka tree, scented with eucalyptus, menthol, and forest floor. It unfolds notes of spiced walnut, cider apple, and sweet hay.
Scapegrace Vanguard is a little sweeter, featuring poached pears, vanilla pudding, and biscuits made from oat flakes and desiccated coconut.
Scapegrace Fortitude made from Manuka smoked malt and Scapegrace Fortuna are also two examples of the discontinued limited editions.
Fortitude is for those who prefer spicy and fruity malt whiskies, while Fortuna combines buttery biscuits with crunchy green apples and roasted chestnuts.
