Scarabus Sherry Cask combines Islay’s smoky character with the influence of first-fill sherry casks. This limited special edition was created with Hanseatische Weinhandelsgesellschaft Bremen to mark its 50th anniversary, exclusively for the German market. Whiskies matured in bourbon and first-fill sherry casks were married for this bottling; a portion underwent its entire maturation in first-fill Oloroso sherry casks. Its sherry character therefore comes from more than just a finish.
Peat smoke, dark berries and sea salt meet warming leather notes and chocolate sweetness. The long, fruity finish complements this contrast between coastal character and sherry influence. Hunter Laing & Co. Ltd is the independent bottler behind Scarabus. Founded in 2013 and based in Glasgow, the family business carries forward three generations of experience in blending and independent bottling. Its background includes its own maturation warehouses, including an expanded warehouse in East Kilbride, as well as the Old Malt Cask and Old & Rare bottling ranges. The distillery producing the malt for this Scarabus edition remains unnamed.
Hunter Laing introduced Scarabus at Islay’s Fèis Ìle festival in 2019. The Old Norse name means “rocky place” and refers to an area on Islay. The enigmatic symbols in the bottle design draw inspiration from the work of Islay-born John Francis Campbell, who collected Celtic folk tales and developed a sunshine recorder.
