SILD Crannog matures afloat: since 2021, the hand-selected 100-litre casks for this limited edition have been stored aboard the cutter Gret Palucca, built in 1941. In the harbour of List on Sylt and during trips at sea, wave motion, salty sea air and changing temperatures accompany maturation.

Crannog is made using, among other sources, barley grown by Jan Petersen in Morsum in the east of Sylt. After cask maturation, water from Sylt Quelle in Rantum is used to bring the whisky to its bottling strength of 48%. Alongside its maritime impressions, Crannog has a robust, peppery character with salty notes and full-bodied malt.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals smoke, delicate vanilla and malt, with hints of iodine, seaweed and white pepper.
• Palate: On the palate, sea breeze and salt meet light malt and a bittersweet note.
• Finish: The finish lingers, remaining pleasantly peaty and complex.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lantenhammer distillery in Bavaria distils the SILD whiskies. Its methods include temperature-controlled fermentation lasting about a week and two distillation runs in small copper stills. Generous cuts separate the heads and tails from the heart used for the whisky.

SILD was founded by Alexander Sievers and Anton Stetter, the owner of Lantenhammer. Sievers took up his father-in-law's idea for an island whisky; Rainer Heiliger was a wine merchant on Sylt. The high cost of storage space on Sylt led to the concept of a floating cask warehouse. SILD thus combines distillation in Bavaria with maritime maturation off List on Sylt.
