Stronachie brings a historic whisky concept together with a present-day single malt from Benrinnes. To revive the brand, A.D. Rattray bought an original bottle from 1904 at auction. A small sample was compared with other malt whiskies, and Benrinnes was chosen for the reinterpretation. Today's bottling therefore does not come from the long-closed Stronachie distillery.

The whisky matures for at least ten years in ex-bourbon casks. For each small batch, A.D. Rattray selects approximately 20 mature casks and marries the whiskies they contain before bottling at 43%. Honey and malty sweetness meet biscuit notes, followed by peppery cereal spice. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, gentle honey notes combine with earthy heather and malty sweetness.
• Palate: The whisky feels smooth on the palate, with abundant honey and biscuits. Pepper and cereal notes then emerge and linger.
• Finish: The finish is soft and balanced.

Distillery/Bottler:

The original Stronachie distillery was established in the 1890s in the remote Ochil Mountains in Perthshire. A.D. Rattray was already distributing its whisky at that time. Rising coal and grain prices led to its closure in 1928. This earlier connection provided a tangible historical starting point for the brand's later revival.

Benrinnes lies on the lower slopes of Ben Rinnes in Speyside. The distillery's history began in 1826; after a flood destroyed the first facility in 1829, it was rebuilt at a different site. Its production methods include worm tubs: in these water-cooled vessels, alcohol vapour condenses inside coiled copper pipes. Operating these condensers at low temperatures contributes to the weighty style of the spirit. This general distillery character provides the backdrop, while cask selection and maturation help shape each individual whisky.

A.D. Rattray was founded in Glasgow in 1868 by Andrew Dewar Rattray. Alongside trading in wines and spirits, the company specialised in storing and blending malt and grain whisky. Under the Morrison family, it further developed its independent bottlings; the Cask Collection began in 2004 with personally selected casks. Since 2011, the company has been based in the former school in Kirkoswald, Ayrshire. For Stronachie, A.D. Rattray handles the selection, maturation and blending of the whisky produced by Benrinnes.
