The Flora & Fauna series presents Teaninich as a single malt in its own right, while much of the distillery's production goes into blended whiskies. This official bottling matures for ten years and is offered at 43% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

The porpoises on the label evoke the nearby Cromarty Firth, where these animals can be seen close to shore. In the glass, the whisky combines a citrus-led aroma with a rather dry, lightly salty taste and spicy, smoky accents. It is chill-filtered and contains caramel colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens with fresh orange and lemon. A violet scent appears in the background and fades again before concentrated orange juice and older oranges come forward. Very light cereal notes suggest cornflakes, accompanied by a hint of beeswax. With a little water, the aroma becomes softer and sweeter, and clover blossoms join the orange, which remains present.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky feels light and slightly sweet, yet dry overall. Pleasant acidity and a small salty note accompany its clean, light-to-medium body.
• Finish: The long finish remains dry and brings back the beeswax note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Teaninich is situated in Alness in the northern Highlands, near the Cromarty Firth. Captain Hugh Munro founded the distillery on his estate in 1817. Today it belongs to Diageo and supplies malt whisky for blends including Johnnie Walker. The ten-year-old Flora & Fauna first appeared in 1992 as an official bottling.

A distinctive feature of production is the combination of a hammer mill and a mash filter. The mill grinds the malt very finely, after which it is mixed with hot water to form the mash. A filter press separates the sugar-rich wort from the solid grain material before the wort is fermented and distilled. This process differs from the usual separation in a mash tun.

Facts:
