Special Features:

A finish in small rye whiskey casks from Chicago shapes this Teaninich from Murray McDavid’s Benchmark series. Distilled in 2014, the Single Malt initially matured in Bourbon Hogsheads before spending two and a half years in First Fill Koval Rye Casks. These casks had previously held rye whiskey from Koval Distillery.

Each Koval cask holds 110 litres, making it smaller than a typical Hogshead. Its internal wood surface area is greater relative to the volume of liquid, allowing the wood to exert a stronger influence during the finish. In the whisky, malty and fruity impressions meet cinnamon, nut brittle and oak spice.

Whiskies from nine casks were used for this eight-year-old edition. Bottled in 2022, the release comprises 1,299 bottles, each containing 0.7 litres at 46% alcohol. The whisky was neither chill-filtered nor given added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, cinnamon and vanilla accompany the aroma of toasted malt.
  • Palate: On the palate, cooked apple combines with nut brittle and spicy oak notes.
  • Finish: The finish leaves a creamy impression in which sweet and savoury notes come together.

Distillery/Bottler:

Teaninich is located in Alness in the Scottish Highlands. Captain Hugh Munro founded the distillery in 1817 after returning from the Napoleonic Wars. A distinctive feature of its later production methods is the combination of a hammer mill and mash filter, used since 2000 in place of a conventional mash tun to produce particularly clear wort.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. The independent bottler embraced further maturation in different cask types early on, including casks from wine production. In 2000, the team took part in reopening Bruichladdich on Islay.

Following the sale of Bruichladdich and Murray McDavid to Rémy Cointreau in 2012, Murray McDavid later passed to Aceo Ltd. At the closed Coleburn Distillery in Speyside, the team stores whisky in traditional Victorian warehouses. For further maturation, spirits are paired with carefully selected casks whose previous contents complement their individual character.
