The family-run Teerenpeli Distillery was founded in Lahti in 2002, bringing Anssi Pyysing’s idea of a Finnish single malt distillery to life. Its original site is in the Taivaanranta restaurant in the city centre. In 2015, a larger distillery was added in Lotila, connected to the Teerenpeli brewery. Distillation takes place in traditional copper pot stills made in Scotland. The original site remains in operation for product development and smaller special batches.
Teerenpeli works with Finnish malted barley and uses groundwater filtered through the gravel formations of Salpausselkä, which were formed during the Ice Age. Much of the barley is grown within 150 kilometres of the distillery. Since 2015, its own wood pellet plant has supplied process heat for the brewery and distillery. The pellets are made from residues from Finnish sawmills, while the electricity used comes from wind and hydropower.
