Tonka bean gives this dry gin its distinctive character: alongside juniper and delicate citrus notes, it contributes sweet vanilla, bitter almond and spicy hay flowers. The recipe contains 23 ingredients in all, bringing tonka bean and juniper together.

Tonka Gin is handmade at a small German distillery. Each batch yields approximately 750 bottles. The rectangular bottle has a light-coloured label with a black tree motif and handwritten production and bottle details. The gin is bottled at 47% in 0.5-litre bottles.

A classic Indian Tonic Water works well in a gin and tonic, while a Dry Tonic Water offers a drier alternative. An orange twist complements the gin’s citrus notes.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The gin is initially very gentle on the nose, combining vanilla with citrus fruit.
• Palate: Vanilla returns on the palate, accompanied by a sweet background note. The gin feels soft and rounded.
• Finish: The finish is long and soft, with tonka bean particularly prominent. A slightly bitter, almost nutty impression lingers.

Distillery/Bottler:

Tonka Gin is the creation of the Hamburg-based Soumikh family. Daniel Soumikh developed the idea after a trip to Spain with his wife Serap, where he discovered tonka bean not only as a culinary spice but also as a cocktail ingredient. He spent almost two years working on his gin with bartenders and a distillery before presenting the first finished bottles on 26 September 2014. Serap Soumikh joined the business a year after its launch.

The gin is made at a small distillery near Hamburg, surrounded by orchards. Distillation, bottling, labelling and packing are all carried out there by hand.
