Special Features:

This Quarterdeck release comes from a single oak cask from Caroni Distillery. Distilled on Trinidad from molasses in a column still on 30 January 1998, the rum matured for 24 years. Duncan Taylor bottled the rum from cask number 37 on 18 February 2022. The worldwide release comprises 281 bottles.

The rum was bottled at a cask strength of 50.7%, without chill filtration or added colour. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a black cylindrical gift tube. Both the bottle and tube feature a red wax-seal motif referring to maturation in oak casks.

Alongside its sweet and fruity impressions, the rum has a darker aromatic side with leather, tobacco, oak and smoke. Caramel, coffee, butter, nutmeg and banana complement the tropical fruit notes, while dry woody tones provide a contrast.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla pods and raisins meet cocoa and marzipan. Roasted pineapple adds to the aromas.
• Palate: On the palate, cinnamon sticks and dried berries mingle with caramel-coated apples. Honey and espresso complement this spicy-sweet combination.
• Finish: The rum has a long, dry finish accompanied by a delicate sweetness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caroni was situated on the Caroni Plain on Trinidad and was closely linked to the island's sugar industry. The distillery belonged to Tate & Lyle from 1936 and passed into full state ownership in the 1970s. It became particularly well known for heavy rums that were also used in blends for the British navy. The distillery is now closed, but surviving cask stocks continue to make releases from its years of production possible.

Duncan Taylor is the independent bottler behind Quarterdeck. The company was established in Glasgow in 1938 as a cask broker and trading house. Under Abe Rosenberg, it built up an extensive collection of matured whisky casks from the 1960s onwards. Today, Duncan Taylor is based in Huntly, Aberdeenshire, and handles cask storage, maturation, blending and bottling. For the rum series, its dedicated spirits team and tasting panel select individual casks from various distilleries.
