A port wine finish follows this Tyrconnell's long maturation in Bourbon Barrels. After ten years, the single malt spends a further six to eight months in selected former port wine casks from Portugal's Douro Valley. The double-distilled whiskey is bottled at 46% alcohol.

Fruity sweetness and spicy accents define its character, with flavours ranging from baked apples and ripe fruit to chocolate and cocoa. Oak, malt and a dry port wine note complement these impressions. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a cylindrical gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Baked apples and root-like notes emerge on the nose.
• Palate: Subtle oak and a trace of malt leave the final impression on the palate once the fruit, chocolate and spices have faded. The path to this interplay of flavours begins with port wine sweetness. Along the way, ripe fruit gives way to gentle spice and delicate cocoa.
• Finish: In the long finish, the warm sweetness recedes, allowing the spices to become more prominent. A dry port wine note accompanies the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

The whiskey comes from Cooley Distillery on the peninsula of the same name in County Louth. John Teeling founded the distillery in 1987 by commissioning the conversion of an existing potato alcohol plant for whiskey production. Cooley produces malt whiskey in pot stills and grain whiskey in continuous columns. The Tyrconnell is one of its double-distilled single malts.

The brand takes its name from the racehorse Tyrconnell, which won an unexpected victory in the National Produce Stakes in 1876. Distiller A.A. Watt marked the win with a whiskey initially intended as a one-off release. Its success turned that special bottling into an enduring brand. Today, the Kilbeggan Distilling Company continues The Tyrconnell, while the horse-racing scene on the label preserves the link to its namesake.
