Special Features:

Nashi pear gives this gin its fruity character without overshadowing the juniper. Ukiyo Nashi Pear Gin is made in Chiba from a base using locally grown rice and is distilled with eleven botanicals. Citrus freshness and herbal accents, including yuzu and shiso, complement the pear and juniper.

The eleven botanicals are juniper, yuzu, mikan peel, bitter orange, Nashi pear, sansho pepper, matcha tea, sakura blossom, Juniper Pine, lavender and angelica root. This selection brings fruit and flowers together with spicy and green ingredients. The gin is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals juicy, fresh pear alongside bright citrus notes. A soft, almost creamy sweetness complements the aromas.
• Palate: On the palate, juniper and pome fruit combine with subtle spice. Anise and coriander add delicate accents, while gentle herbal notes and a light warmth complement the flavours.
• Finish: The finish is soft and rounded. Gentle sweetness and a silky mouthfeel linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ukiyo produces its Japanese spirits in Chiba, east of Tokyo. The brand name refers to the “Floating World”, the transient world and an appreciation of the present moment. As Ukiyo's distiller, Michael Pearce oversees the gin range.

For its gins, Ukiyo combines rice and grain distillates as a base. The selected botanicals are steeped in this base for 15 hours to release their essential oils. Distillation then takes place in a specially designed copper still with a capacity of 2000 litres. Its construction encourages reflux during distillation, and each run yields 100 litres of gin. Japanese water is also used in production.
