Oregon’s wine country shapes this Westward release: after maturation in new, lightly charred American oak casks, the single malt is finished in French oak casks previously used for Pinot Noir. These come from wine producers in the Willamette Valley. The finishing period lasts up to two years, adding red fruit, earthy spice and a hint of tannin to the whiskey.

The whiskey is made entirely from malted barley. Alongside its fruity, malty core, it offers plums, apricots and chocolate ganache, as well as apple, plantain and nutmeg. Dried and dark fruits complete this range of flavours. It is bottled at 45% alcohol, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pome fruit notes mingle with tobacco and freshly cut grass.
• Palate: The palate reveals raisins, figs and apricots.
• Finish: Pronounced malt notes meet herbaceous oak and dark chocolate on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Westward is based in Portland, Oregon. The distillery brings local brewing culture into single malt production: regionally malted barley, ale yeast and slow fermentation at a low temperature first produce an American ale. This is distilled twice in custom-designed pot stills. Their low reflux is intended to preserve the character and texture of the original beer in the spirit.

For its initial maturation, Westward uses new American oak casks that are heavily toasted and only lightly charred. The team then marries the whiskeys in small batches. For the Pinot Noir Finish, collaboration with regional wine producers extends this approach with a second maturation phase.
