Special Features:

The stout finish links Westward's single malt to Oregon's brewing culture. After its initial maturation in new, lightly charred American oak casks, the whiskey spends up to a further year in casks that previously held stout from regional partner breweries. This dark beer contributes chocolate, coffee and dark malt notes to the whiskey.

The edition grew out of a long-standing cask exchange between Westward and breweries in the Pacific Northwest: the distillery supplies its partners with emptied whiskey casks, then takes them back after the beer has matured to use for the finish. Roasted grain, stone fruit and toasted pecans complement the chocolate character. The whiskey is bottled at 46%, and each bottle contains 0.7 litres.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, hazelnuts and honeycomb mingle with roasted barley. Caramel, vanilla and stone fruit complete the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, milk chocolate and banana meet almond toffee. Pronounced roasted notes and pecans complement the flavours.
• Finish: Oak, vanilla and chocolatey almond notes linger on the dry, medium-length finish, joined by mint and citrus.

Distillery/Bottler:

Westward makes its single malt in Portland, Oregon. It starts with two-row barley grown and malted in the Pacific Northwest. Ale yeast and slow fermentation at a low temperature first produce a beer that forms the basis for distillation.

Westward then distils twice in custom-designed pot stills with low reflux. Their design is intended to produce a robust spirit. For the initial maturation, the distillery uses new, lightly charred American oak casks. The matured whiskeys are married in small batches; for the stout edition, this is followed by additional maturation in the beer casks.
