For this white overproof rum, Wray & Nephew blends distillates from copper pot stills and column stills at New Yarmouth Distillery in Jamaica. The different distillation methods produce distinctive rum components, which are then blended. Molasses forms the base and is fermented with spring water and a yeast culture passed down through generations. Jamaican limestone-filtered water is also used in production.

At 63% alcohol, this bottling belongs to the overproof rum category, with a strength well above that of many conventional rum bottlings. Its fruit-led character makes it particularly suited to mixed drinks: in rum punch, for example, it is combined with pineapple, cranberry and lime. The 0.7-litre bottle contains rum produced and bottled in Jamaica.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Pineapple and overripe banana lead the nose. A hint of brown sugar complements the fruit aromas.
• Palate: The rum opens dry and grassy on the palate. Sweet notes of vanilla, banana, coconut and molasses follow.
• Finish: The finish is smooth and long-lasting. Warmth and subtle hints of overripe fruit linger.

Distillery/Bottler:

The history of J. Wray & Nephew began in 1825 with the Shakespeare Tavern, opened by John Wray in Kingston. His nephew Charles James Ward joined the business in 1860 and developed the tavern and spirits trade into a major export business. Following the takeover by Lindo Brothers & Co., Appleton Estate also became part of the company in 1916. J. Wray & Nephew has belonged to Campari Group since 2012.

Today, New Yarmouth Distillery is responsible for White Overproof. During production, the individual pot-still and column-still rums are distinguished as marques, each with its own aroma and flavour profile. Blending these components creates the characteristic rum, which is filtered and adjusted to its final strength before bottling.
