Writers’ Tears Red Head takes its name from the ruby-red colour it develops while maturing in Oloroso sherry butts. This triple-distilled single malt matures exclusively in selected Spanish casks that previously held Oloroso sherry. The sherry influence therefore runs through the entire maturation rather than coming only from a final finish.

With Red Head, Walsh Whiskey added a single malt to the Writers’ Tears range for the first time in 2016. The launch comprised 12,000 bottles, offered mainly in selected markets from September. The whiskey has an alcohol content of 46%, is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, orange peel and dried fruit combine with plum notes reminiscent of sherry.
• Palate: On the palate, the Oloroso brings nutty notes. Spicy raisins and creamy oak complement the flavour.
• Finish: An orange note accompanies the long, layered finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bernard and Rosemary Walsh founded Walsh Whiskey in 1999. The approach behind its Writers’ Tears and The Irishman brands combines Irish whiskey traditions with new cask combinations. The company works with selected partners, sourcing both Irish spirits and suitable casks from different countries. When choosing casks, particular attention is paid to their previous contents, alongside wood quality and construction.

Writers’ Tears draws on the connection between Irish literature and whiskey culture in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The brand name alludes to the tale that the tears of whiskey-loving writers were themselves made of whiskey. The malt and pot still whiskeys historically produced in copper stills provide the reference point for the range; within this concept, Red Head focuses on single malt.
