Der Pioniergeist der ersten lizensierten Brennerei in Glasgow, welche 1770 gegründet wurde, soll die Basis für die Glasgow Distillery sein. Nach mehr als 100 Jahren ohne Brennerei setzt die Glasgow Distillery die Tradition des Scotch Malt Whisky in der Metropole fort. In der Hochzeit, lange vor der Weltwirtschaftskrise 1930, gab es noch hunderte aktive Brennereien in Glasgow.
Seit 2014 wird nicht nur der 1770 Glasgow Single Malt produziert, sondern auch Gin unter dem Namen „Makar“.
